John gained his Diploma in Architecture in his native Australia. His career path led to the United Kingdom where he built up a strong portfolio of sport and leisure projects and partnered with Populous on the design of Sheffield Arena, a £32 million award-winning arena for the World Student Games in 1990. His work on racecourse projects, indoor multi-event centres and arenas took him to Bahrain, Venezuela and Spain, and further experience in the commercial and educational fields broadened his international base. He was personally responsible for the design of the acclaimed Odyssey Arena in Belfast, part of the Landmark Millennium Project for Northern Ireland, which opened in December 2000.

As a Senior Principal of Populous (formerly HOK Sport Venue Event) in the London office, John is involved in the planning and design of major sports and leisure facilities. His recent projects include the Faro and Benfica stadia in Portugal completed for Euro 2004, and the Speed Skating Arena for the Winter Olympics in Torino 2006. He is currently working in partnership with Frank Gehry on the revolutionary King Alfred scheme in Brighton, Sussex and is design team leader for the Arena to be constructed inside the O2 Arena in Greenwich, London, predicted to be Europe's most exciting entertainment venue.

John has a particular interest in urban regeneration using sport and leisure, education and entertainment as the catalyst for development and as Principal in Charge of a team of masterplanners for the 500-acre Olympic Park, recently celebrated the awarding of the 2012 Olympic Games to the City of London.
